If Gladys really loved him, why would she marry someone else with no warning. And it sounds like at the beginning of the book that is just leading him on and is really just like, I'm putting up with you to make other people happy, I don't really like you, we're just friends. Not helpful to that guy, who endangered his life for her. I mean really!
