Final "Question"

Favorite things about of Oliver Twist:

The first thing I like about the book were the constant plot twists. From introducing new characters to revealing characters' pasts, it just never stops!

Following shortly after that, are the characters themselves. They have well-written motives. From Fagin's want for money to Mr. Brownlow recognizing Oliver's features, this makes all of the characters are fairly believable.

Most importantly, however, is the happy ending. It wouldn't have been any fun at all to see Oliver go though all of his trials and tribulations only to be finally corrupted or killed at the end. Who would enjoy that?

As for the cast, uh...

Turns out I don't have to do it! Hooray!

Now that I no longer need to read books from the list, on to Shadowmarch! Written by the author of my favorite trilogy (including 5-book trilogies), Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, I have high hopes for this one.

  1. Would you recommend Oliver Twist? It seems like you're in a hurry to finish it.

  2. hey Rex,
I agree with your point on non happy endings. I find that reading a 500 page book just to have the main charactor be killed is a total waiste of time.

  3. To Dorothea, I'd recommend it because of the ending. Like a few other classics I've read, however, while you're reading it it just doesn't hold your attention.

To Aaron, someone agrees with me, hooray! Who wants to see a character who you are, to a point, emotionally invested in just die?

  4. I agree, mostly. Happy endings are very good for longer books, but in The Time Machine, for instance, the ending leads one to believe that the main character died. This type of ending can be very interesting and thought provoking, in my opinion.

  5. I don't know, I'd say that the ending of The Time Machine implies that he stayed in the future. Also, thought provoking (to me) does not equal a good read. Take Moby Dick for instance.
